A padstal (Afrikaans for "road stall") is the little farm shop beside the road — usually on a farm or just outside a small town — where you stop for fresh produce, home baking, biltong, honey, preserves and a cup of coffee with a story attached. It's part of South African road-trip culture: not a petrol-station shop, but a place with a face and a name behind the counter.
Every padstal is different — that's the point. From roosterkoek and pies to droëwors, farm eggs, seasonal fruit and handmade gifts. Many have a coffee corner or a play area for the kids, and nearly all have that one speciality people make a detour for.
